Day 1 – Excursion to the Conero Riviera
Key locations:
Sirolo
Numana
Conero Regional Park
Iconic beaches (e.g. Due Sorelle Beach)
Morning – Sirolo and Conero Park
Panoramic walk on the Sentiero del Conero:
The Conero Regional Park offers numerous hiking trails with breathtaking views of the Adriatic coast.
I recommend starting early in the morning to enjoy the tranquility and the best light.
Example of an easy trail: the “Sentiero del Passo del Lupo” (moderately challenging in some sections, but extremely scenic).
Visit the historic center of Sirolo:
Charming village with narrow streets and romantic views of the sea.
Take a coffee break in one of the bars overlooking the coastal panorama.
Afternoon – Numana
Descent on foot or by shuttle to the beach of Numana Alta or Numana Bassa:
Possibility of relaxing by the sea or, if the season allows it, taking a dip.
Alternatively, for those looking for a more “sporty” excursion, there is the possibility of renting a kayak or taking a short boat tour to explore the coves in the area.
Fish-based dinner:
The restaurants on the coast offer typical dishes such as brodetto all’anconetana, a must for lovers of seafood.
Practical advice:
Light trekking clothing and shoes for the trails.
In the summer months, bring enough water and sunscreen.
Paid parking and shuttles: inquire in advance for any reservations.
Day 2 – Frasassi Caves and surroundings
Key places:
Frasassi Caves (Genga)
Gola della Rossa and Frasassi Regional Natural Park
San Vittore alle Chiuse Abbey
Morning – Visit to the Frasassi Caves
Guided tour of the caves:
The Frasassi Caves are among the largest and most spectacular karst complexes in Europe.
The tourist route includes walkways and a guided tour that lasts about an hour/an hour and a half.
Be careful of the internal temperature (constant around 14 °C): bring a sweatshirt or a light jacket even in summer.
Visitor center and museums:
Possibility to visit the Speleopaleontological Museum and learn more about the geological history of the place.
Afternoon – Abbey of San Vittore and trekking in the Gola della Rossa
Stop at the Abbey of San Vittore alle Chiuse:
A fascinating Romanesque complex on the banks of the Sentino river, a stone’s throw from the caves.
Perfect for a quick lunch in the surrounding area (restaurants with typical Marche cuisine, meat specialties and local cured meats).
Short excursion in the Gola della Rossa and Frasassi Natural Park:
Various trekking paths or easy walks for those who are not trained.
Splendid views of the gorges and rock formations.
Return and dinner:
If you are staying near Jesi or Fabriano, it is advisable to enjoy the traditional cuisine: cheeses, cured meats and local wines (Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi is renowned and ideal to taste).
Day 3 – Culture and Poetry: Recanati and Loreto
Key Places:
Recanati
Casa Leopardi
Loreto (Basilica of the Holy House)
Morning – Recanati, the city of Giacomo Leopardi
Visit to Casa Leopardi:
Guided tour of the home of the poet Giacomo Leopardi, with the famous family library.
Walking through the streets of the village, visiting Piazza “Sabato del Villaggio” and the hill of the Infinite, an inspiring setting for his lyrics.
Historical center and museums:
Pinacoteca Comunale and other small museums that tell the history and culture of the area.
Recanati is a charming village with characteristic views; don’t miss the Torre del Borgo for a panoramic view.
Afternoon – Loreto
Basilica of the Holy House:
One of the main Marian sanctuaries in Europe, a destination for pilgrimages for centuries.
For art lovers, the Basilica houses works of great value, frescoes and mosaics.
Food tour in the surrounding area:
The farmhouses in the hinterland offer dishes with local products (fossa cheese, Marche cured meats, vincisgrassi).
If you have time, visit the nearby oil mills or cellars to taste regional oils and wines.
Day 4 – Macerata and the surrounding hills
Key places:
Macerata (historical center)
Sferisterio
Small villages in Macerata (Esanatoglia, Cingoli, Treia)
Morning – Macerata, city of art
Visit to the Sferisterio:
A neoclassical monument famous for its summer opera (Macerata Opera Festival).
Guided tours available to discover the unique architecture of this amphitheater.
Tour of the historic center:
Piazza della Libertà, Loggia dei Mercanti, Palazzo Buonaccorsi (with the Art Gallery and the Carriage Museum).
Walking through the alleys, stopping for a coffee in one of the historic bars.
Afternoon – Villages in the hills of Macerata
Cingoli, “the Balcony of the Marche”:
About half an hour from Macerata, it offers an extraordinary panorama over the entire region.
Worth visiting is the historic center and, in the surrounding area, Lake Cingoli for a short walk in the greenery.
Treia:
A charming medieval village, with panoramic squares and imposing walls.
You can end the day with an aperitif in one of the bars with a view.
Return and typical dinner:
Recommended to taste the vincisgrassi (similar to lasagne, a symbolic dish of the Marche tradition) and pair it with a local red wine (Rosso Conero or Lacrima di Morro d’Alba, if you prefer a more aromatic taste).
Day 5 – Sibillini Mountains National Park
Key locations:
Sibillini Mountains National Park
Piani di Castelluccio di Norcia (season permitting)
Visso, Ussita, Frontignano (depending on available access)
Morning – Trekking and nature
Hiking itinerary:
There are numerous routes of varying difficulty. If you are looking for a moderate trek, the path that leads to Monte Sibilla or Lago di Pilato (the latter more challenging) can be an exciting option.
For an easier hike, you can take short walks near Piani di Castelluccio (known for its spectacular flowering between late May and early July).
Characteristic villages:
Visso is one of the symbolic villages of the Sibillini, with a beautiful historic center and gastronomic specialties such as ciauscolo (a typical spreadable salami from the Marche region).
Afternoon – Relax and gastronomy
Tasting of typical products:
Salami, sheep’s cheese, Castelluccio lentils (IGP), honey.
Often you will find mountain huts or restaurants where you can taste dishes based on black summer truffle or porcini mushrooms, depending on the season.
Extra activities:
For the more sporty, in some areas it is possible to go paragliding or mountain biking on the slopes of the Sibillini.
In winter, if the snow allows it, snowshoeing or skiing in the Frontignano or Bolognola resorts.
Recommended period and additional tips
Spring and summer: ideal for the favorable climate, the flowering in Castelluccio and to enjoy the Riviera del Conero in all its splendor.
Autumn: excellent for the foliage, the local festivals of seasonal products (mushrooms, chestnuts, new wine).
Winter: recommended only if you are a fan of winter sports or want to visit the cities of art in the low season, keeping in mind that some mountain areas may be difficult to access.
Transportation:
If you travel by car, it is easier to cover all the locations indicated.
The main train connections are to Ancona and Macerata, but for many inland villages you may need to rely on local buses or private transport.
Accommodation:
If you love coastal towns, you could base yourself in Numana/Sirolo to enjoy the sea and move around during the day.
If you prefer the tranquility of the hinterland, evaluating agriturismi between Macerata and the surrounding hills can be an excellent choice.
